‘Life-changing’ trial gives hope to thousands living with peanut allergies
Identifying nut allergy
Richard Lassiter, a 44-year-old with a severe peanut allergy, can now eat peanuts daily after participating in a "life-changing" desensitisation trial.
The trial gradually exposed participants to increasing amounts of peanut protein, ultimately allowing many to tolerate the equivalent of five peanuts without reaction.
This research offers hope for adults with peanut allergies, as previous studies primarily focused on children.
Lassiter, who experienced multiple hospitalisations due to accidental peanut exposure, now consumes four peanuts every morning as part of his routine.
While larger studies are needed, this trial demonstrates the potential effectiveness of peanut desensitisation treatment in adults, though it should only be done under close medical supervision.
