Several rare and enormous jellyfish, nicknamed the ‘pink meanie’ (Drymonema larsoni), were spotted on a Texas beach, featuring tentacles that can stretch up to 70 feet.
More than 10 of these cotton candy-coloured jellyfish, which can weigh more than 50 pounds, were observed along a 10-mile stretch of the coastline.
Their appearance is linked to an influx of moon jellyfish, their primary food source, making sightings of the "pink meanies" relatively uncommon.
Despite their intimidating size, the ’pink meanies’ deliver only a mild sting, rated as a "two out of 10," though beachgoers are still advised to exercise caution.
Jace Tunnell, director of community engagement at Harte Research Institute, confirmed their rarity and advised against eating them, noting they quickly evaporate on land.
