  • Several rare and enormous jellyfish, nicknamed the ‘pink meanie’ (Drymonema larsoni), were spotted on a Texas beach, featuring tentacles that can stretch up to 70 feet.
  • More than 10 of these cotton candy-coloured jellyfish, which can weigh more than 50 pounds, were observed along a 10-mile stretch of the coastline.
  • Their appearance is linked to an influx of moon jellyfish, their primary food source, making sightings of the "pink meanies" relatively uncommon.
  • Despite their intimidating size, the ’pink meanies’ deliver only a mild sting, rated as a "two out of 10," though beachgoers are still advised to exercise caution.
  • Jace Tunnell, director of community engagement at Harte Research Institute, confirmed their rarity and advised against eating them, noting they quickly evaporate on land.
