Russia jails British man for 19 years for fighting for Ukraine

  • Former British soldier James Anderson has been sentenced to 19 years in prison in Russia.
  • He was accused of fighting for Ukraine in Russia's Kursk region and faced charges of terrorism and mercenary activities.
  • Mr Anderson was captured in November and will serve the first five years of his sentence in prison before being transferred to a penal colony.
  • In an interrogation recording released by Russia, he said he served in the British army before joining the Ukrainian foreign legion.
  • Mr Anderson’s father Scott has previously said his son went to Ukraine “because he thought he was doing what was right”.
