Urgent warning over fake fuel bill scam that steals your card details
Fraud prevention bodies have issued the warning
Criminals are using fake fuel bill assistance offers to steal card details and set up digital wallets.
The scam involves texts and social media posts with malicious links, often disguised as help with winter heating bills or undelivered parcel notifications.
Victims are tricked into providing one-time passcodes (OTPs), which criminals use to link the victim's card to their own digital wallet.
This allows criminals to make online and in-store purchases using the victim's card.
Fraud prevention bodies advise caution with unexpected offers, verifying requests with trusted sources, and reporting suspicious activity to banks and Action Fraud.
