A centuries-old map, detailing Spanish colonial presence in what is now Mexico and the southwestern United States, has been officially returned to the Mexican government.
The historic document was handed over in Albuquerque by FBI agents and Mexican officials, concluding a multi-year effort to repatriate the item.
The map, which illustrates the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro route and various communities, including Native American settlements, is considered a vital piece of Mexico's cultural heritage.
It was discovered missing from Mexico's national archives in 2011 and later identified by a librarian in Santa Fe when offered for sale, prompting an investigation.
Mexican officials emphasised the map's role in enriching collective memory and strengthening historical ties between Mexico and New Mexico.
