Beaches closed in Australia after man killed by shark

  • An Australian man died after being attacked by a large shark at Long Reef beach, near Dee Why in Sydney on Saturday morning.
  • Emergency services were called shortly before 10am local time after the man, who was surfing outside the patrolled area, sustained critical injuries.
  • He was retrieved from the surf and brought to shore but died at the scene; two sections of his surfboard were recovered for examination.
  • Following the incident, beaches between Manly and Narrabeen were closed, and nearby clubs cancelled all water activities for the weekend.
  • This marks the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since February 2022, when a swimmer was killed off a beach.
