Doctors weigh in on Supreme Court’s trans women ruling
Big Brother's first transgender winner would refuse hospital treatment in male ward after Supreme Court ruling
The British Medical Association’s resident doctors' wing has condemned the Supreme Court's ruling on biological sex as "scientifically illiterate" and harmful to transgender individuals.
The ruling stated that trans women are not legally women under the Equalities Act, allowing their exclusion from single-sex spaces if deemed "proportionate".
The BMA doctors argue against a binary divide between sex and gender, emphasising its lack of scientific basis and harmful impact.
This follows the BMA's rejection of the Cass Review's findings on gender identity services and its call to lift the ban on puberty blockers for minors.
The ruling has sparked debate and calls for the Equality and Human Rights Commission to withdraw its interim guidance on single-sex spaces, with concerns about potential breaches of trans people's rights and forced outing.
