Over 650 businesses have warned the UK government that the Equality and Human Rights Commission's draft guidance on single-sex spaces is "unworkable" and would cause "significant economic harm".
The draft guidance, developed after a Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of women, has been criticised for potentially excluding transgender people from public life.
The organisations argue that the proposals would create operational challenges, risk legal action, and impose substantial financial burdens, particularly on small and medium-sized enterprises.
Ben & Jerry’s, Lush, Lucy & Yak, and hundreds of small cafes and pubs have signed a letter to Minister for Women and Equalities Bridget Phillipson, urging her to stop the proposals from moving forward.
The EHRC has submitted its updated code of practice to Ms Phillipson for approval, with the government confirming it will consider the draft.
