Donald Trump threatens to sue for $1b as BBC row deepens
Outgoing CEO of BBC News says 'mistakes are made' after she quit over Trump speech edits
Donald Trump has threatened a billion-dollar legal action against the BBC over the editing of a Panorama documentary concerning his speech before the US Capitol attack on 6 January 2021.
BBC chairman Samir Shah has apologised for an "error of judgment" regarding the editing, which critics claim misleadingly suggested Trump called for violent action.
The controversy led to the resignations of BBC News chief executive Deborah Turness and director-general Tim Davie, following concerns raised in Michael Prescott's report.
Trump's lawyers demand a retraction of "false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements" by Friday, or he will pursue legal action for no less than $1,000,000,000 in damages.
The BBC has stated it will review the letter and respond directly, with chairman Shah assuring a commitment to impartiality and a review of all issues raised in Prescott's memo.
