Trump says he’s working on new crime bill with GOP leaders
Trump says he will seek death penalty for murders in D.C.
President Donald Trump has announced plans for a "comprehensive crime bill", which he is working on with Republican leaders, following his declaration of a "crime emergency."
Trump has recently deployed National Guard members to Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, with plans for other cities, and signed an executive order to train troops for "civil disturbances."
Despite a 30-year low in violent crime in Washington D.C., Trump's federal takeover has led to thousands of National Guard members being deployed, some now carrying firearms.
The president has faced criticism for his crime statistics and tactics, with a federal judge condemning an "illegal search" during the D.C. takeover.
Trump recently proposed the death penalty for anyone who commits murder in Washington D.C.
