  • President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Friday to officially rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War.
  • The name change is part of the Trump administration's 'warrior ethos' campaign, which has included banning books at military bases and ordering a name change for the USNS Harvey Milk.
  • Both Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth have argued that the US achieved more victories under the previous 'Department of War' designation.
  • The order will also change Hegseth's title to Secretary of War.
  • The Department of Defense was established in 1949, replacing the Department of War after the Second World War.
