Trump issues extraordinary new demand for Ukraine’s minerals
Keir Starmer supports Trump's mineral deal with Ukraine after US meeting
US President Donald Trump has proposed new demands for US control over Ukraine's mineral and energy assets, including oil and gas.
The proposal would grant the US all royalties from these assets until Ukraine repays $100 billion in war debt, then 50 per cent of royalties thereafter, with the US holding veto power over sales to other nations.
The new deal goes beyond a previous minerals agreement that collapsed in February during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's disastrous White House visit.
Ukrainian officials have criticised the proposal as "robbery", potentially hindering Ukraine's EU membership prospects.
Ukraine has reportedly enlisted a team of legal advisers to help examine the document and prepare a counter-offer.
