Donald Trump set to make key change to future US elections
Trump demands California voter ID law for wildfire relief
Donald Trump has pledged to issue an executive order mandating voter identification for all US elections and severely restricting mail-in voting.
This proposed executive order is widely expected to be challenged in court as unconstitutional, as the US Constitution assigns election regulation to states and Congress, not the President.
Trump previously attempted to mandate proof of citizenship for voting, which was blocked by a federal judge due to concerns it would disenfranchise millions.
His focus on voter ID and mail-in voting stems from his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud following his defeat in the November 2020 presidential election.
Legal experts, including former White House special counsel Norm Eisen, have stated that such an executive order would be illegal and have vowed to challenge it immediately.
