The West Point alumni association cancelled an awards ceremony for actor Tom Hanks, who was due to receive the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award.
The association stated the cancellation, scheduled for September 25, was to allow the Academy to focus on its core mission of preparing future officers.
Donald Trump celebrated the decision, asserting that “WOKE” recipients should not receive “cherished American Awards” and called for other award shows to review their standards.
Hanks was being honored for his positive portrayal of American service members and advocacy for veterans, including his roles in films such as Saving Private Ryan.
The cancellation aligns with Trump's broader campaign against “woke” ideologies within military institutions, contrasting with Hanks' long-standing support for Democratic causes.
