Trains to use scenic diversion during main line shutdown

Avanti West Coast will be using its trains on the historic Settle to Carlisle line in January
Avanti West Coast will be using its trains on the historic Settle to Carlisle line in January (Stuart Walker/Avanti West Coast)
  • Avanti West Coast will operate services on the historic Settle to Carlisle line for the first time in over a decade during the first 14 days of next January.
  • This diversion is necessary because the West Coast Main Line (WCML) will be closed between Preston and Carlisle for the replacement of Clifton Bridge.
  • Avanti will deploy its bi-mode Evero trains for a shuttle service between Preston and Carlisle, as the Settle to Carlisle line is not electrified.
  • The £60 million project involves replacing the 60-year-old Clifton Bridge, which currently has weight restrictions, to allow unlimited freight and passenger trains.
  • Passengers travelling to Scotland from major English cities are advised to use the East Coast Main Line, while rail replacement buses will serve Lancaster, Oxenholme, and Penrith.
