Retired footballer warns FA must take urgent action after Billy Vigar’s death
Arteta pays tribute to former Arsenal youngster Vigar
Chichester forward Billy Vigar, 21, died after sustaining a fatal head injury during an Isthmian League Premier Division match on 20 September.
Vigar collided with a concrete wall at Wingate and Finchley while attempting to keep the ball in play, leading to his hospitalisation and eventual death.
Alex Fletcher, a player seriously injured in a similar incident in 2022, stated that the FA's planned safety review is “too little too late” and that Vigar's death was “entirely preventable”.
Fletcher, who retired from football due to his injuries, claimed that calls for change have been ignored by the FA.
The Football Association earlier announced it would conduct an immediate safety review of perimeter walls at grounds within the National League system; it has been contacted for further comment.
