FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani has confirmed that FIFA, not US President Donald Trump, holds the authority to decide on 2026 World Cup host cities.
This clarification followed suggestions by Trump that he relocate matches from cities he considers "dangerous," such as Seattle and San Francisco.
Trump had previously stated his administration would ensure cities were "safe" for the tournament and threatened to move games if any city was deemed unsafe.
Montagliani said that football is "bigger" than political rhetoric and individual leaders.
Other considerations for the 2026 World Cup include scheduling games to account for intense summer heat.
