Iconic European stadium set to be demolished in £172m plans
San Siro Set for Demolition After Sale to Milan and Inter Approved
Milan City Council has approved the sale of the San Siro stadium to AC Milan and Inter Milan following a nearly 12-hour overnight debate.
The vote, which passed 24-20, allows the clubs to proceed with their plans to demolish the 99-year-old ground and construct a new 71,500-seat stadium as part of a wider urban regeneration project.
The sale, valued at 197 million euros (£172 million), must be finalised before 10 November to avoid complications arising from the second tier's historical significance.
The new stadium is intended to be a world-class facility, ready for Italy's co-hosting of the 2032 European Championship, as the current San Siro is no longer considered modern enough for UEFA tournament matches.
While the clubs and Milan's mayor view the decision as a historic step, opposition groups, such as the populist 5-Star Movement, have criticised the deal as excessive real estate speculation.
