The recent World Athletics Championships in Tokyo were significantly impacted by extreme heat and high humidity, with temperatures exceeding 30C and feeling closer to 40C.
Japan experienced its hottest summer on record, leading to concerns for athletes' well-being and prompting the relocation of some road race events to earlier start times.
World Athletics president Seb Coe stated that the Olympic sports calendar requires "re-engineering" due to the ongoing climate crisis and governments' perceived inaction.
Coe suggested that endurance-based events, such as marathons, may need to be scheduled later in the year to avoid unsafe conditions for competitors.
The issue highlights the increasing challenge climate change poses to international sporting events, following similar heat-related adjustments at the delayed 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
