Medal hopeful out with injury at World Athletics Championships

Tokyo runners set new mass relay world record to mark start of World Athletics Championships
  • Great Britain experienced a double blow on the third morning of the World Athletics Championships with two key athletes withdrawing from their events.
  • Molly Caudery, the 2024 world indoor champion, was forced to withdraw from pole vault qualifying after sustaining an ankle injury during her warm-up.
  • Emile Cairess retired from the marathon in the 38th kilometre, citing the extreme heat and humidity in the Japanese capital as the reason.
  • Caudery's withdrawal was particularly disappointing as she was ranked fourth and had aimed for redemption after a poor Olympic debut.
  • Cairess described the conditions as “very, very humid” and “too hot”, despite his efforts to prepare and use cooling stations during the race.
