Londoners asked for their say on who they want as mayor - we wish they hadn't been

Only 55 per cent of Londoners would be comfortable with a Muslim mayor, a new poll by YouGov has suggested.

In a survey of 1,153 London adults, 31 per cent said they were uncomfortable with the notion, including 73 per cent of Ukip voters.

Thirty-nine per cent of Conservatives said they were uncomfortable with a Muslim mayor, compared to 22 per cent of Labour supporters and 18 per cent of Liberal Democrats.

Meanwhile 71 per cent of people overall said they were comfortable with a homosexual mayor and 76 per cent said they were comfortable with someone from an ethnic minority.

Ukip supporters were the least comfortable of all parties with candidates with all of the surveyed traits, whereas Labour and Liberal Democrat supporters were the most comfortable.

The number who said they were “comfortable” with the idea of a Muslim mayor declined with age.

However, the number who said they were “comfortable” with the idea of a female mayor increased with age.

Tessa Jowell was polled as the frontrunner of Labour's mayoral candidates, with 42 per cent seeing her as the best candidate, excluding those who said "Don't know" or "None of these".

Zac Goldsmith was the Conservatives frontrunner, with 79 per cent seeing him as best of the Tory candidates, excluding those who said "Don't know" or "None of these".
