OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The hotel sits on the edge of the Chatsworth estate in Baslow, a well-kept village with some smart little shops and restaurants. It's on a busy main road but the bedrooms are all on the opposite side of the building, so you get lovely views and no traffic noise to disturb your sleep. There's good, varied walking in all directions and particularly dramatic views if you head north from the hotel to Baslow Edge and Curbar Edge.

By car: the hotel is 35 mins from Sheffield, 1 hour 30 mins from Birmingham and 3 hours 30 mins from London. There is free parking on-site.

By train: London St Pancras to Chesterfield takes 1 hour 45 mins. The hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to Chesterfield.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The overall look is a smart country house, with a blend of antique and modern furnishings, big stone fireplaces and tweed-jacketed staff. There's no skimping when it comes to details - fabrics are sumptuous, walls are adorned with original artworks from the Cavendish family collection and the plush carpets are monogrammed with the family crest.

THE FACILITIES

Reception sells entrance tickets to Chatsworth, can arrange for guests to go fishing on the estate's rivers, and keeps a stock of guidebooks and maps for walkers and cyclists to borrow. You'll also find two electric car charging points in the car park and a small putting green on the terrace.
