OVERVIEW

This 66-bedroom bed and breakfast occupies several townhouses on a graceful residential Georgian terrace a short walk from the heart of Bath. The reception, bar, breakfast room and majority of bedrooms have recently been completely refurbished in a rather glamorous Art Deco style. Yet-to-be-renovated bedrooms, in a separate wing along the street, are much less appealing.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Henrietta Street is a lovely residential street lined with creamy-stone Georgian terraces and with not much in the way of passing traffic. The city centre is a short stroll away: you can be at the Roman Baths in five minutes, and the train station is a little over ten minutes' walk. Great Pulteney Street, the most impressive Georgian street in Bath, is a one-minute walk away, and peaceful Henrietta Park is also close by.

By car: around 45 minutes from Bristol, 2 hours 30 minutes from London and 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. On-site parking costs £12 per day.

By train: there are direct services to Bath Spa from Bristol Temple Meads (11 minutes), Cardiff Central (1 hour 5 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 15 minutes). The hotel is around a 12-minute walk from Bath Spa station. Book trains to Bath Spa.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Handsome original Georgian features such as sash windows and marble fireplaces provide Henrietta House with lots of underlying character. The main section of the property, which includes the reception, bar, lounge and breakfast dining area and the majority of bedrooms, has recently been given a top-to-toe makeover in a swish Art Deco style.

THE FACILITIES

Staff, led by general manager Stefanel Vieru, are friendly and capable, but Henrietta House isn't as personal a place to stay as many of Bath's B&B's - it's part of a portfolio of UK properties run by a hotel management company. It's also a member of Radisson Individuals, a new brand that allows independent hotels to promote themselves using Radisson's global reach.

BED AND BATH

Bedrooms in the "boutique wing" have recently been redesigned in a slick Art Deco style, and have silvery grey leather headboards, built-in mirrors, sophisticated lighting, and stylish, modern bathrooms. Bedrooms in the "traditional wing" need an overhaul and are not nearly as appealing.

Room types: Individual, Cozy Small, Standard, Superior, Hot Tub, Private Garden, Premium, Junior, Top Floor Suites

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with shower, queen bed, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

There's a lot of choice for breakfast, including homemade granola, French pastries and fruit salad, and on the cooked front vegetarian/vegan versions of a full English, porridge and omelettes. The Art Deco-styled bar off the reception is open throughout the day and the evening.

Breakfast: continental and cooked options. Open daily 8-10.30am.

Bar: elegant old-school décor. Open daily noon 'til midnight.
