OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Bell lies at the centre of the village of Ramsbury, surrounded by attractive, mostly Georgian, cottages. The inn is part of a sprawling and productive estate. The village stretches along the banks of the River Kennet; the surrounding Marlborough Downs and nearby Savernake Forest offer excellent walking country.

By car: around an hour from Bristol, 1 hour 45 minutes from London and 2 hours from Birmingham. Free parking on-site.

By train: London Paddington to Hungerford takes under an hour. It's a 10-minute taxi ride to the hotel. Book trains to Hungerford.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The 300 year-old building has been thoroughly renovated. Calming, neutral colours allow characterful features (such as original oak beams and fireplaces) to shine. The rooms, which are named after fish and game birds, have an unfussy country style. After a long countryside walk, hot chocolate and cake in the café hits the spot.

THE FACILITIES

The restaurant, bar and café mean there are plenty of options when it comes to food. This is a small hotel though so there are no additional facilities. If you need to work there is good Wi-Fi. Hotel guests receive 10% off the Ramsbury Estate brewery and distillery tours.

FOOD AND DRINK

The food and drink offering here is varied, with a bar menu for traditional pub food, a restaurant serving a creative, modern menu, a tapas bar on weekends and a café for light bites and tasty cakes. The estate provides much of the produce, right down to the beer served in the bar.

Restaurant: locally-sourced produce and award-winning beers and spirits. Open Tue-Sat for lunch and dinner, Sun for lunch.

Café Bella: informal dining, serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Open Tue-Sat, 8am-4pm.
