OVERVIEW

Five-star Hotel THe Volcán offers a history lesson alongside a stylish stay. You would be forgiven for thinking you'd made a wrong turn when you enter what appears to be a chapel before reaching reception. For a more contemporary leisure experience, you're handily placed to explore Marina Rubicón shopping centre.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Half an hour by hire car or taxi from the airport, Hotel THe Volcán is situated in plush Playa Blanca. The unspoilt Papagayo beaches are an easy drive or a relaxed hike away. This is south-west Lanzarote with glorious views of Fuerteventura, which is closer than capital Arrecife but more difficult to get to. La Cocina de Colacho (Machin) in Calle Velázquez offers nouveau cuisine as artistic and avant-garde as its address would suggest.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Lanzarote take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Lanzarote airport. Free parking available. Book flights to Lanzarote.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

A low-level development, just the way architect/artist César Manrique liked it, Hotel THe Volcán has a quintessential Lanzarotean design: it's styled to resemble a typical pueblo. At night, the ambience is magical as the lights illuminate hearts and minds. A nocturnal stroll walking off dinner is pure joy.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are attentive but a queue can build up checking in. There are four swimming pools along with a children's one. Hotel THe Volcán Lanzarote caters for guests with varying levels of fitness, with a games room, gym and squash court. They can arrange diving, mountain biking, and sailing excursions.
