OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Lanzarote is not the biggest island but the relatively off-the-map situation of Costa Calero may suit certain visitors more than others. Still, it's just a 12-minute drive from the airport along the LZ-40 in a hire car or taxi. Puerto Calero is a micro resort that seamlessly blends into the natural environment, where they host a weekly craft market. The picture-perfect Amura restaurant nearby offers a modern take on classic Mediterranean cuisine.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Lanzarote take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 12-minute drive from Lanzarote airport. There is free public parking. Book flights to Lanzarote.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Unashamedly modern in terms of design, Costa Calero nevertheless features white-washed walls and a low-level exterior to fit in with the Lanzarote ethos of minimal-impact tourism; its style is functional rather than eye-catching. The ambience is relaxed with the pace of a guest's stay set to the watching-the-world-go-by speed setting.

THE FACILITIES

They go above and beyond on the service front at Costa Calero with quietly efficient staff. Facilities are amongst the best on the island. There are four swimming pools, three of which are freshwater (one is specifically for children) and the other seawater. All are heated in winter.

Next door, the Puerto Chico Pool Bar serves snacks, as does Pool Bar Jameo. Bar Mateleñas offers cocktails and a show while Piano Bar Mauro has more stripped-down entertainment.
