THE LOOK AND FEEL

The abundance of old pictures and paintings, antique furniture, stone fireplaces, wooden floorboards and smart, understated fabrics promote the Victorian feel of the hotel, yet always with a modern twist. Touches of Tartan and thoughtfully chosen artworks give a Scottish ambience. Yet there's no neglect of mod cons, such as USB charging ports, underfloor heating in bathrooms, a large TV and luxury toiletries from local brand the Highland Soap Company.

THE FACILITIES

The staff here are always friendly, helpful and attentive. The hotel doesn't have many facilities; its strengths are more the peace and quiet it offers in supremely comfortable surroundings. With just 13 bedrooms it feels homely, and the inviting lounge is ideal for a pre-meal drink, a board game or a bit of reading. Gorgeous forest walks are on the doorstep.

FOOD AND DRINK

The cosy restaurant is housed in a rugged, wood-clad old byre (cowshed), and there's a small bar, although it's a pity there are only bottled beers. Much of the menu consists of delicious Indian food, namely 'The Northern Frontier' cuisine. The Scottish have been influenced by Indian cuisine and spices for centuries, with recipes brought back by visiting soldiers.

Emily's Byre: rustic restaurant and cosy bar, Indian cuisine. Dishes include chicken biriyani and Hyderabadi lamb shank. All-day menu, open daily.
