THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

On the north side of State Route 111 at Indian Wells Lane. Indian Wells lies in the east of Greater Palm Springs and is a sporty, residential city. Some 400,000 tennis fans flock here every March for the BNP Paribas Open. Transfers from Palm Springs Airport take 40 minutes, and there is valet and self-parking, both with fees. The property is bordered on three sides by the greens of the Celebrity course at the Indian Wells Golf Resort. The Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa is also close by.

By plane: flights to Palm Springs take 14 hours from London with a stop in Phoenix, Arizona. The hotel is a 40-minute drive from the airport. Parking costs $27 per day. Book flights to Palm Springs.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Covering 45 acres of landscaped grounds, this is a large, busy resort that generates a lot of happiness for its guests. It's so big you're given a map at check-in and required to wear a wristband. While the water park is the main focus, the generously-sized rooms and sizeable spa offer pockets of peace.

THE FACILITIES

With nine pools, two tennis courts, four pickleball courts, a fitness centre open 24/7, plus bikes and lawn games, there's every reason to get active here. Golfers get discounted green fees at the neighbouring golf resort, which has a night-time driving range using illuminated balls. Service is keen and cheery.
