Shabana Mahmood, the newly appointed home secretary, is expected to announce plans to house asylum seekers in Ministry of Defence sites.
The initiative aims to close dozens of asylum hotels, which have been the focus of multiple protests over the summer.
The announcement comes after a major Labour reshuffle, with Ms Mahmood taking charge of borders and asylum policy.
The scale of the challenge was highlighted by the arrival of approximately 1,000 people in the UK by small boats on Saturday.
Ministers are also reportedly close to finalising an asylum seeker returns deal with Germany, following a similar agreement already secured with France.
