  • Nearly 20,000 residents in Berlin faced evacuation following the discovery of two unexploded Second World War bombs.
  • Around 7,500 people were evacuated overnight on Thursday from the Fischerinsel area after a bomb was found under the Spree river.
  • Berlin police confirmed on Friday morning that the Fischerinsel bomb was a dud and posed no danger, allowing residents to return home.
  • Separately, a 100kg bomb discovered in the Spandau district on Wednesday will require the evacuation of approximately 12,000 people for its defusal on Friday.
  • The incidents caused significant disruption, including the halting of ship traffic on the Spree river and the opening of emergency shelters for affected residents.
