David Lammy refuses to defend Trump’s attack on Iran

David Lammy refuses to say whether US attack on Iran was ‘right’ or ‘legal’
  • Foreign secretary David Lammy has repeatedly declined to say during a BBC Radio 4 interview whether US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities were legal or justified.
  • Mr Lammy maintained that the UK was not involved in the action and that legal discussions were for the US, emphasising diplomacy as the ultimate solution.
  • Armed forces minister Luke Pollard similarly refused to comment on the US military action in Iran, saying it was not his place to do so.
  • The questioning followed reports that UK attorney general Richard Hermer suggested similar attacks by the UK might not be legal, raising concerns about undermining the case against Russia's actions in Ukraine.
  • The US attacked Iranian nuclear sites including Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz, with the UK government informed beforehand but not participating in the strikes.
