The epicenter was located in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, just north of Newark, approximately six miles below ground.
Tremors were felt across all five boroughs of New York City and throughout New Jersey.
New York City Emergency Management advised residents to check for hazards, such as shifted items, falling debris, or cracks, and to be prepared for possible aftershocks.
No injuries or significant damage were reported in either New York or New Jersey following the quake, which is considered unusual for the region.
