The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula following two earthquakes that struck in the sea nearby on Sunday.
The larger quake registered a magnitude of 7.4 at a depth of 12 miles, located 89 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a 6.7 magnitude quake occurring minutes earlier.
An initial tsunami warning for Hawaii issued by the USNational Weather Service was later cancelled after further investigation confirmed no threat to the island.
Russian state media reported potential wave heights, with up to 60 cm expected for the sparsely populated Aleutsky District and up to 15 cm for the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky urban district.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center advised that tsunami waves reaching one metre above tide level are possible for some Russian coasts, urging at-risk coastal populations to stay alert and follow instructions from local authorities.
