Food inflation in the UK is now projected to reach 5.7 per cent by the end of the year, a significant increase from earlier forecasts.
The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has warned that current food price increases are "steeper than anything in recent decades", with specific products like sugar, milk, and cheese seeing substantial rises.
Aldi UK's CEO, Giles Hurley, cautioned that any new burdens on businesses in the upcoming Budget could further drive up grocery prices for consumers.
The FDF said that UK food inflation has been higher than in comparable European countries, suggesting domestic policies are a key factor.
Businesses face mounting cost pressures from new packaging rules, increased labour costs, and potential changes to business rates, leading to calls for government partnership to mitigate inflation.
