Home Office hails ‘critical first steps’ as asylum seekers arrive under France deal
Starmer confirms first one in, one out migrant flight has taken off from UK to France
A family of three asylum seekers has become the first to arrive in the UK via a new legal route under a 'one in, one out' deal with France, in what the Home Office has called “critical first steps”.
This arrival follows the recent deportation of the first migrant from the UK to France under Sir Keir Starmer's flagship agreement.
In total, four migrants have now been removed from the UK to France, which ministers claim is a significant step against criminal networks.
The UK-France treaty, effective since August, allows the UK to detain and remove those entering by small boat, blocking their access to the UK asylum system.
In return, the UK is accepting an equal number of eligible migrants through a new legal route, subject to rigorous security checks.
