Heathrow Airport closed all day after fire causes ‘significant’ power outage
Huge fire breaks out after explosion at electrical substation in Hayes
Heathrow Airport has been shut down until at least midnight Friday due to a “significant” power outage caused by a fire at a nearby electrical substation in Hayes, west London.
Passengers are being told not to travel to the airport under any circumstances. At least 1,351 flights to and from Heathrow are directly affected, with the potential for further cancellations and delays.
British Airways says it has suspended flights to and from the hub until further notice.
About 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines are tackling the blaze, which has led to the evacuation of 150 people and power outages in hundreds of nearby homes.
The London Fire Brigade advises Hayes residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the significant amount of smoke.
