Alternative vision for Heathrow expansion revealed

Simon Calder explains how Heathrow and Gatwick expansions could work
  • Hotel tycoon Surinder Arora's Heathrow expansion plan, named Heathrow West, is partnering with Singapore's Changi airport to offer a world-class passenger experience.
  • Arora Group proposes a 2,800-metre runway, which they claim would avoid the costly and disruptive diversion of the M25 motorway.
  • This plan, developed with Bechtel, is estimated to cost under £25 billion and aims for the new runway to be operational by 2035.
  • Heathrow's owners have also submitted their own proposal for a 3,500-metre runway, estimated at £21 billion, to be privately funded.
  • Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is currently reviewing both expansion plans to facilitate the Airports National Policy Statement review later this year.
