Several people killed after huge car explosion in New Delhi
Aftermath of Delhi explosion as at least eight dead in blast near Red Fort
A powerful car explosion near Delhi's iconic Red Fort on Monday evening killed at least eight people and injured 20 others.
Police are investigating the incident under India’s anti-terrorism laws, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), though the cause has not yet been confirmed as an act of terrorism.
The blast, which occurred around 6.52pm, destroyed a police post 100 metres away and damaged numerous vehicles, with fragments found up to 200 metres from the site.
Investigators traced the Hyundai i20 involved to a 34-year-old man from Pulwama, Indian-administered Kashmir, who had recently purchased the vehicle.
Preliminary findings suggest a heat-based explosion, causing severe burns and crushed limbs, and authorities are examining potential links to a recent discovery of 350kg of explosives in a neighbouring state.
