Unwell Britons urged to isolate for two days amid norovirus surge
Fresh norovirus outbreak warnings as vomiting bug cases rise to highest level for a decade
England's top doctor, Professor Sir Stephen Powis, has urged people to self-isolate for two days if experiencing symptoms of norovirus.
A surge in cases of the virus has led to more than 1,000 patients being hospitalised daily, double the number that were hospitalised in 2023.
The public is advised to wash hands frequently with soap and water and avoid contact with others until 48 hours after symptoms subside. Alcohol gels are ineffective against norovirus.
Professor Powis emphasised the continued strain on the NHS and urged people only to use 999 and A&E for life-threatening situations.
The announcement coincides with Professor Powis's upcoming departure from his role as England's top doctor this summer.
