Tory party chairman calls for homelessness minister to resign after rent hike accusation
Rushanara Ali, the homelessness minister, resigned from her government role following accusations of significantly increasing the rent on her East London townhouse.
Ms Ali was accused of raising the monthly rent by £700 on her four-bedroom property after the previous tenants' contract ended.
In her resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Ms Ali stated that remaining in the role would be a "distraction from the ambitious work of this government".
Shadow housing secretary Kevin Hollinrake had called for her resignation, labelling her actions as "staggering hypocrisy" given her ministerial position.
Her departure marks another blow to the Prime Minister, following other recent resignations from the government.
