Breakthrough in Russia-Ukraine talks, but no ceasefire

  • Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a prisoner exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war each during their first talks in over three years.
  • The talks, mediated by Turkey, took place in Istanbul. They failed to achieve a ceasefire due to Russia's "non-starter" conditions.
  • Ukraine is seeking further sanctions against Russia unless a 30-day ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump is accepted.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky consulted with Mr Trump and European leaders following the talks.
  • Russia claims to be open to a diplomatic solution but has expressed concerns about Ukraine using a ceasefire to regroup and rearm.
