Equalities minister: Trans women should use men’s toilets
MAFS’ first trans star Ella Morgan warns UK Supreme Court ruling could amplify abuse
UK Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson has said that transgender women should use male restrooms, saying that access to services should be based on biological sex.
Ms Phillipson said that businesses should have “appropriate” facilities in place, which could include unisex toilets.
The comments follow a Supreme Court ruling confirming that "woman" and "sex" in the 2010 Equality Act refer to biological sex.
The ruling allows trans women with gender recognition certificates to be excluded from single-sex spaces if that is deemed proportionate.
Ms Phillipson welcomed the clarity provided by the ruling, saying single-sex spaces are important, especially for women who have experienced violence or abuse.
