Pogacar pays tribute to late Italian cyclist after Tour de France stage win
Top cyclist, 19, dies after mid-race crash in Italy
Tadej Pogacar has dedicated his victory on stage 12 of the Tour de France to Samuele Privitera, a 19-year-old Italian cyclist who died this week after crashing during the opening stage of the Giro della Valle d’Aosta.
Privitera, a Hagens Berman Jayco rider, reportedly came off his bike during a descent, losing his helmet and colliding with a gate before succumbing to his injuries.
After reclaiming the yellow jersey following the Hautacam climb, Pogacar expressed his sadness, saying he thought of Privitera during the final kilometre of the race.
“This stage can go for Samuele, to all his family,” the Slovenian cyclist said.
Axel Merckx, the owner of Privitera's team, described him as “irreplaceable”, praising his joy, spirit, and kindness.
