Europe secured a 15-13 victory over the USA in the Ryder Cup, but the event was marred by incidents involving spectators.
American golf legend Tom Watson, an eight-time major winner, has now issued an apology for the “rude” and “mean-spirited” behaviour of the home crowd at Bethpage Black.
Rory McIlroy in particular was targeted with abuse throughout the three days, including a beer being thrown over his wife, Erica Stoll.
McIlroy described the language and behaviour as “unacceptable and abusive”, saying that golf should be held to a higher standard.
Watson, a former Ryder Cup captain, said he was ashamed “as a former player, captain and as an American”.
