Robert Pattinson - a Hogwarts wizard in vampire heaven

Robert Pattinson's death in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' was only the beginning. James Mottram meets the heart-throb blood-sucker who has now found the essence of Salvador Dali

Robert Pattinson's death in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' was only the beginning.

Robert Pattinson's death in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' was only the beginning.

It's funny how fame can strike those least likely. The last time I met Robert Pattinson was in late 2004. It was on the set of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in which he played the murdered Hogwarts pupil Cedric Diggory. A shy, gawky 18-year-old, this boy from Barnes did not seem a star in the making. Nor did he look "exotically beautiful", as The New York Times dubbed him upon viewing his career-making performance as the lovelorn vampire Edward Cullen in the recent teen sensation Twilight.

For his brooding portrayal of Cullen, Pattinson was suddenly hailed as the new James Dean, a risky mantle for any young male actor to inherit (particularly if they're from England). Not that he's done little to dispel this after admitting that he aped the Giant star's vocal patterns to play the part. "Everyone loves a bit of James Dean," he told one reporter, explaining he used the same trick for "chatting up girls". This month's US edition of GQ magazine even has him channelling his inner Dean in a photo shoot that highlights just how gym sessions for Twilight helped sculpt his stubble-clad face.

When we meet again, his bush of brown hair looking more Dean-like than ever, I remind him of our previous encounter. "That was depressingly long ago," he groans, too young still to be aware that, in the grand scheme of things, four years is not so much. Still, it's not hard to see why he feels this way, given what a blur the last 12 months have been for him. Even before Twilight, Pattinson was finding love notes from female admirers left under the windscreen wiper of his car. "That was months before the movie came out," he acknowledges. "Now, it's really bizarre."

In the run up to the release of the film, adapted from the first of Stephenie Meyer's quartet of bestselling books, Pattinson toured a series of shopping malls in America to promote the film. The hysteria was like Beatle-mania revisited as girls fainted, screamed and asked him to bite them. You can bet Bela Lugosi never had to deal with this. "It's a weird experience," he concedes, "and you do tend to start getting a little bit paranoid about stuff. Looking around when you're walking down the street, in case you get mobbed by teenage girls!"

Rubbing his sleepy eyes, he admits he's still trying to get his head round it all. "So many people have watched Twilight or heard about it, you can be sitting anywhere and the chances are someone will come up and recognise you." This, he adds, included coming out of a sandwich shop in Yorkshire, and being accosted by the only person on an otherwise empty street and being asked for a photo. "How can you have immediate recognition in Guisborough coming out of Benjis?" he giggles. "That was very strange!"

Still, there must be a part of him that's secretly relieved that his new film, Little Ashes, is light years from Twilight. It is set in Spain when the country was in the grip of fascism. Pattinson plays surrealist painter Salvador Dali, when, as an 18-year-old, he moved to the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid to study art. As a role, it couldn't be juicier. In a portrait of an artist as a young man, Pattinson gets to show us the "self-conscious and hyper-sensitive" creature cowering beneath a persona that, even at that age, was outlandishly flamboyant.

According to Pattinson, Dali's whole character is sleight of hand. "I guess in a lot of ways, it's the story about him putting a mask on," he says. "In the rest of his life, a lot of the time he forgets he's wearing the mask. Or he's aware he's wearing the mask but he can't get it off. I found that the most interesting part of him. Someone who's wearing this mask, which is destroying everything in their life... they can't get it off and they can't remember how to get it off. They can't remember who they were before. And if they go back to who they were before, it'll probably destroy them too."

It is directed by Paul Morrison. As the film suggests, it was Dali's intense, formative relationship with playwright and poet Federico Garcia Lorca (played by Javier Beltran) that shaped him in this way.

"Whenever he does touch reality, which he does when he's younger, in brief little moments when he gets through his shyness to actually connect with someone, it causes mayhem in his life," says Pattinson. "I think he was like that the rest of his life. And his relationship with Lorca scared him from having any kind of reality in his life at any point afterwards."

I wonder if Pattinson relates to Dali on a personal level, given that he has suddenly experienced the whirlwind of fame that the painter so readily sought out in his later years.

"Just hyper-consciousness and stuff... I guess I do relate to that quite a lot," he mumbles. "What I really related to is this idea of ambition. Just being so concerned about being the best and being known for being someone important... he keeps continually forgetting that it doesn't really mean anything at all. And I always found that idea interesting. But I think Dali has a lot of shame – and I don't really have that!"

Pattinson admits there is some comparison between Dali and Twilight's Cullen, who endures a similarly fraught affair with a teenage girl. "I think both of them were terrified. Especially Dali. He had so many sexual hang-ups. He was crippled by so many different things.

"If you read some of his early-life autobiography, it's horrible... the amount of mental anguish he has to go through, just to have any kind of even vaguely sexual relationship. It's really depressing what he's going through in his head. Dali had a massive fear of penetration – penetrating someone or being penetrated."

According to Pattinson, he sees playing Dali as a turning point in his career. "To not betray or insult someone's memory, it seemed a lot more important than other jobs I've done before," he says. "I definitely felt I had a lot of freedom when I was doing for various reasons." Still, how does he think the Twilight fans will react to his love scenes with Beltran? "I think girls" – at this point he can't stop himself from a smutty chortle – "almost really like watching something like that. From what I've read, people really get excited about that – it sounds really sexy!"

Inevitably, since Twilight came out, speculation has surrounded Pattinson's own love-life, linking him with numerous starlets, including 10,000 BC's Camilla Belle. "I don't really care about it," he shrugs. "I have the same little set of friends and I don't have anyone who would really get affected adversely [by false rumours]. Every single person who they sort of romantically link me to... I just don't even really know anyone. So it doesn't really affect me that much." Is there any truth to the persistent rumour hooking him up with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart? "Er, no," he states. "I don't understand where that even comes from."

Certainly, when Pattinson tells you that things haven't "really changed so much in my head" since Twilight came out, you can believe him. Willing to please, he carries the bewildered air of someone who still can't quite believe what has happened to him. Yet it'd be unfair to dub him "lucky", for his is not simply a case of 'right place, right time'. When he was 17, he decided against going to university – not that he got accepted to any, mind – to carry on with his acting. He immediately won a bit part in Mira Nair's Vanity Fair, followed by a more substantial role in Ring of the Nibelungs, a TV film inspired by Wagner's Ring cycle.

Raised with two older sisters, who, he has previously admitted, used to dress him up as a girl and call him Claudia up until he was 12, Pattinson's upbringing sounds comfortable. His father, Richard, deals cars and his mother, Clare, used to work in a model agency. It was his father who suggested Pattinson get involved with amateur productions at Barnes Theatre Company. "That was only because he saw a bunch of pretty girls who were going to it, and said: 'Hey Rob, you've got to go to that.' That's the reason I still do it!"

Pattinson knows that the female attention will not diminish with the Christmas 2009 release of Twilight sequel New Moon. He's pleased it doesn't feel like a mere money-spinner. "It feels like we're making a stand-alone movie." He's even at ease that his life is going to be turned upside down once again, having accepted how impossible it is to control his public image. "You can never be known for what you want to be known for," he notes. "People will know you for whatever they want to know you for." For a 22-year-old, that's surprisingly perceptive.

'Little Ashes' opens on 8 May

Pattinson's a very versatile and charismatic actor with tremendous screen presence. I think he's a fantastic prospect and I'm thrilled we have another British actor doing so well in Hollywood. From what I've seen from clips his performance as Dali in Little Ashes is superb.

It's really nice to read something significant and dignified about Rob Pattinson. I do feel bad for him, as I can't imagine just going for a cup of coffee and having the flash, snap, snap, flash going off in my face the whole time, or photos of me talking on my cell phone while walking down the street making such big news. UGH! The poor guy! But on the other hand, we all have choices in life and this is his. I admire the way he handles it all though, and I think he's setting a good example for younger actors.

Brilliant! Thank you so much for speaking with Rob and getting his insight on playing Dali. It is wonderful to witness this gentleman growing as an actor. I hope he continues to accept roles that are challenging and fulfilling. It is difficult to imagine losing privacy to the degree that he has. I couldn't stand it. Agreed, he is quite perceptive for only 22, and also introspective and genuine. He is simply charming and disarming, and I hope that never changes about him.

Can't believe this guy is only 22. He's so beyond his years and his star is going to shine for some time. I hope the press delivers more truth than made up gossip. It so sad because the real fans want the truth. Hope it all goes well

This is truly a fabulous article. Out of everything I have read about Robert this one is by far the most enlightening one to date. I'm excited for the release of 'Little 'Ashes' and can not wait to see him step outside the box. If he keeps his head level he has a brilliant future ahead of him. I just hope one day he can be outside that typecast he's been pulled into because I believe this young man has much more to offer than a beautiful vampire.

Thank you for such a lovely article.

It's an interesting article. There's something going on with his Twilight costar(s) whatever it may be. It's a bit of a shame so many girs and guys just want to see the movie cuz Rob's in it or they want to see him in a sex scene. Dali was an AMAZING artist and suffered for his art. Even look at his work... it's insanely detailed. Whether Dali was gay or bi... he later married his wife who was his muse and everything. I'm interested to see the movie, though. It does look well done. I'm glad he did it BEFORE his mega fame happened. He might not have been able to take the opportunity.

So often lately I've been stuck reading articles criticizing his attitude, his acting or his appearance. It's nice to read something that's preatty much stayed away from all the stupid hype and focused on Rob as a person and as an actor, not as a commodity. It's great to see Rob taking on projects outside his 'teenage heartthrob' persona and I'm very excited to see Little Ashes and How to Be. Don't get me wrong, I love the Twilight Saga with every fibre of my being, but I think there's a lot more to Rob than just a beautiful vampire and a gorgeous young wizard.

I 100% agree with this comment....he MADE Edward Cullen come alive in Twilight...but I think he will be an amazing actor in years to come and many diverse roles...he is a really intense, and indepth person for his age. I just adore him....and I am "one of those mothers of teenage children" that are swooning over him. He certainly has talent and I think he carries himself well and not let the "Hollywood Hype" get the better of him!! Good on You Rob!!! I hope to see you in many more years to come bringing to life many diverse, different characters!!!

Robert Pattinson is a bit of an enigma. Even though so much has been written about him, there is a part of him that never sees the light of day, and people sense this. He himself is feeding this frenzy, unknowingly so.

He is obviously a gentleman, a gentle old soul, not many of those just hanging around. He goes counter to the aggressive culture in the USA. The character of Edward Cullen seems so patrician and FOREIGN. He does fit that description indeed. Killer sense of humour to boot.

Never mind Jude Law, who seems to have squandered his opportunity as a leading man. Robert Pattinson is more like the next Brad Pitt, but instead of being a younger replacement he is in a league of his very own. He already has the self awareness to doubt everything being thrust at him. He is immensely lucky to have eeked out two features which place him firmly in the "actor" category. He will be know for those roles where people forget Edward Cullen when they see him. If he can convincingly play any other character and BE that character, the world will be his oyster. His current world is now very small. About the size of an airplane or of a hotel room. I can't imagine traveling the world and not being able to go sight-see to my heart's content, openly and anonymously. For everything in life there is a balance. SuperStars get to be rich, but also have to adjust to new boundaries. Gladly, one is always alone inside one's head.

When you have it all, what keeps you going? His life has become just like Edward's, having all the trappings that we consider advantages and feeling trapped. Chin up Rob, this too shall pass. Leonardo DiCaprio did not have the character building experiences Rob has had growing up in a normal environment. He may have been Hollywood tough, but we are always our harshest critic, he still had to come to terms with super stardom. He's not as famous anymore, he can live a peaceful life. There's always hope, but his spirit was broken a little. That is a terrible price to pay for being number 1 - don't forget the lesson of Dali Robert. If you don't have yourself, you have nothing.

All the best to see you pursue the best roles yet and for the chance to develop your music too.

You said that very well, almost like you can relate. Anyone can see that he truly appreciates the opportunity that Twilight has given him, but most people think Twilight defines him. At a time that he should be dating, hanging out with friends and having fun being himself and exploring, he can't. That has to be difficult for anyone, especially at his age. Being only 2 years his elder, I cannot imagine having my life spiral out of control like his has. He needs to take a break and venture somewhere that he can get away from it all. He doesn't seem to be very comfortable with the way people see him. I can understand why. He is not Edward Cullen.

I hope he continues to pursue his music career. Do not let the things that matter the most to you slip away.

Thank God he seems to be a true Brit and won't take all this hype too seriously. Good on him for doing more "out there" film roles. Us Brits love Johnny Depp for his ability to be able to act, keep his life private and choose roles that won't always make him the "pretty boy". I would hope this guy keeps grounded and doesn't get to seduced by the attention.

I dont usually compare actors but whenever I see Pattinson I cant help but be reminded of Johnny Depp. Both are quirky actors who can fit into any time period or genre of film. Both have a warmth to them and both have an air of mystery about them. Pattinson becomes the character he is playing. You never sense he's ACTING. I'm quite excited about his future.

He's the only young actor coming through in the industry that I think has the potential to be as big as Depp. He needs some good directors but then dont all actors. He has the talent and charm to go far. His versatility is the key. I can imagine him in evil roles as well as heroic ones. Comedic roles and musical roles. Most actors leave me flat but I'm very drawn to Pattinson. Ok he has good looks but its more than that. Its star potential. Few have it. You want to watch him on screen at the expense of any one else.

I saw Pattinson at Raindance in Little Ashes and he gave an exceptional performance. Its a very difficult role and he pulled it off with aplomb. He shows he is as comfortable with comedy as he is the more dramatic moments. I can see him having a carer like Depp's if top director's give him a chance. He's an exciting find. A brave actor for someone so young. Go see Little Ashes and you'll see what I mean. I'm hoping he'll work with Summit on the new Houdini film which is being marketed as a new adventure franchise or as the lead in Pompeii based on Robert Harris' book. He'd also make a good Gatsby in Bazz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby or as F Scott Fitzgerald in The Beautiful and the Damned.

Pattinson has an old soul. He reminds me of a mix of Depp, James Dean and a sprinkling of Errol Flynn's charm. Very few actors have the whole package - talent, likeability, looks and charisma. He has a large fan base and while Twilight may have brought him to the attention of many fans they continue to be fascinated by him because of his charisma, talent and his long term potential. Yes he's learning as he goes along but he continues to push himself. Roles like Dali would test the most experienced of actors but he is extraordinary in the role. He needs to build a long term relationship with a director. Depp had Burton to challenge him and Pattinson needs a similar relationship. He's hamstrung playing the same role until next year but its good to see he is trying to squeeze in other roles in the short breaks between Twilight films. Summit should sign him to a long term contract and develop another franchise for him. Go back to the old Hollywood studio relationships with actors. Pattinson's versatility is paramount, not only is he a fine dramatic actor but his comedic skills are exceptional and his musical skills are superb. Its good to see a leading man who actually looks like a leading man and not the short school boys we have to put up with. I;d like to see him play Jeff Buckley in a bio pic or as Moritz in Spring Awakening. On stage he;d make a wonderful Mozart in Amadeus.

I agree that this article/interview reads well. I also agree that Rob seems to be a very old sole. You don't see that much in young actors, especially with someone who has shot to stardom so quickly. It seems that it isn't 'going to his head'. However, I don't agree that this is the best interview he has given. It is more so about Little Ashes, which hasn't had that much coverage yet, and probably won't, in comparison to the Twilight sags. I believe this will gear toward a completely different crowd, meaning that most TwiMoms will probably not expose their younger girls to this side of "Edward Cullen".

From what I have seen, this is a great departure from what we have seen of Rob, which will definitely do wonders for him in the business. I agree he has a great future ahead as an actor. Also, that it is very endearing that he is so taken aback by the stardom. If he can keep some of this quality he will continue to attract and be admired.

Wonderful Article

I don't usually post comments on these sites but this is the best article I have seen about Rob Pattinson. He is more mature and grounded at 22 than I am at 42. Everyone else is so worried about the trivial stuff, who he is dating, what he is wearing, etc., etc. Ugh! Yes, he so amazingly sexy (those eyes are do die for) but it just gets boring reading the same thing over and over again. Noone lets him talk about who he is as a person. And, yes I have read the Twilight series (four times) and seen the movie three times (can't wait for New Moon) and he portrays Edward Cullen to perfection. But I'm sure there is more to him than Edward Cullen. He has a life outside of acting I'm sure. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in many versatile roles. Keep up the good work Rob. Don't let hollywood make you something you are not.

I actually believe him on his relationship with Kristen Stewart. I think they had amazing chemistry for Twilight and it showed their talent as actors. If they look close off set or in pictures when out as friends, again I think it's because of their amazing talent as actors. They have bonded as friends for a role. For anyone who has read the Twilight Saga, they should know the closeness that Stephanie Meyer wrote about for Edward and Bella and I think that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have consumed themselves so much in their roles that it has bonded their friendship. They are two actors that I'm looking forward to watching their careers grow in Hollywood.
