For many years, Marvel fans have been wondering when a Black Widow movie would finally be released, the character — played by Scarlett Johansson — having debuted in Iron Man 2.

Although a fan-favourite, the superhero studio has remained tight-lipped about any potential spin-off. Last year, there was some hope as reports emerged claiming Jac Schaeffer had been hired to write a standalone film for the former SHIELD agent.

Now, Captain America himself, Chris Evans, has seemingly confirmed a Black Widow movie is on the way. Speaking to ET Canada about Black Panther’s success, the actor said: “There's nothing [Marvel Studios] can't do.

“And I'm sure it's gonna have the exact same effect when Captain Marvel comes out, and then the Black Widow movie comes out. Marvel just has the winning recipe and they're kind of one step ahead of everybody else."

Although mentioning the Black Widow movie, Marvel refuse to comment on upcoming releases past the untitled fourth Avengers, which Black Widow is scheduled to appear in.

Johansson has played the character on multiple occasions, including Iron Man 2, Avengers, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.

Many have questioned why Black Widow has not had a solo film when the majority of other Avengers have — the studio has yet to release a female-led superhero movie. By the time a Johansson-leading movie does reach cinemas, Brie Larson's Captain Marvel would have been released.

Writer Schaeffer's previous credits include the Disney short Olaf's Frozen Adventure, while her name is attached to Nasty Women, the forthcoming all-female Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.

Meanwhile, Marvel’s most recent blockbuster, Black Panther, has been breaking box-office records around the world.
