The Nolans made the Batman Begins teaser overly bleak to assuage fans’ fears of it being another campy Batman film

'Remains some of my favorite writing from these films...wouldn't have worked in the film.'

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy would prove to be a bold, gritty reimagining of the comic book character, but prior to the first film, Batman Begins, fans weren’t to know that.

Sensing our worry that we’d have another Mr Freeze-type Batman film on our hands, Christopher’s brother and collaborator Jonathan cobbled together the darkest teaser trailer possible.

Here it is (in 240p, because it was 2004 remember):

When the teaser’s bleakness was picked up on in a Reddit thread this week, Jonathan Nolan himself popped up to acknowledge it.

“Thanks dude, I wrote this in a couple hours in my brother's trailer while he was shooting the scene in which Bruce is arrested for stealing Wayne corp supplies on his ‘journey.’" he wrote.

“Remains some of my favorite writing from these films. Was written specifically for the trailer. Wouldn't have worked in the film.”

Jonathan’s next project is a big one - a new drama series for HBO based on the 1973 sci-fi/western film Westworld.
