Leonardo DiCaprio has hinted he thinks he should have won an Oscar for one of his previous films.

The 41-year-old has been nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the The Revenant.

It is the sixth time the actor has been nominated for an award as both an actor and a producer - but has yet to go home victorious.

When asked on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, whether he fears the hype around his nomination would "talk him out of winning" an Oscar, he said: "The truth of the matter is that I've been in situations before where I've thought films or performances, either mine or others, should be either nominated more or adored by the public, or critics should revere it more.

"But it's beyond your control."

The film, which has been nominated for 12 awards in total, tells the story of a fur trapper Hugh Glass played by DiCaprio, who crawls across the wilderness after being left for dead by his company.

He said: “Knowing that I did a movie that took this much of my life, that we devoted this much to as far as focus is concerned, we gave it everything we possibly could.

“To sit here looking at receiving that many nominations for this film, it not only feels good but it also feels like people have a yearning to see a different type of film.”

The actor, who has also been nominated for his acting roles in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond, said it is unlikely he would ever make a physically grueling film like The Revenant again.

He said he was forced to endure icy rivers, eat raw liver and crawl through snow: “I think certainly the conditions that we had to shoot in were the main thing, the freezing cold temperatures.

“But everyone that was a part of this movie – including myself – knew from the very onset that we were gonna getting involved in something that was going to be incredibly challenging.”
