DVD & Blu-ray review: Flight (15)

Robert Zemeckis DVD/Blu-ray (138mins)

This solemn look at addiction never really surpasses its terrifying plane crash in the opening sequence. However, Denzel Washington (pictured), on top form, holds it ably together with a convincing performance as a sozzled pilot, Captain Whip Whitaker.

His functioning alcoholic manages to miraculously land his bust-up passenger jet, which is seemingly in fatal freefall. Six passengers are lost, but the rest are saved and Whip is hailed a hero until the toxicology report comes in. It feels like it should be a true story, but this gripping oddity is pure fiction.
