DVD: Cemetery Junction (15)

"Stop listening to music made by poofs," Bruce says. "Stick on some Elton John!" Lots of jokes at John's expense, and about being "queer", in this 1973 "naughty boy" comedy from Ricky Gervais.

Billed as an exposé of the seedier side of Reading in the 1970s, it is actually a sentimental and almost laugh-free story centring on three pals – two pretty, the other portly – coming of age. One finds a job working for an insurance company and its joyless boss (Ralph Fiennes), while rebellious Bruce (Tom Hughes) works as a welder. It's got a crushingly predictable soundtrack ("All the Young Dudes", "Crazy Horses" etc), and is no funnier than the average episode of 1970s sitcom Bless This House.
